How should I placard my Cargo Transport Units?

In line with the placarding provisions of The International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code, appropriate labels, placards, marks, and signs should be affixed to the exterior surfaces of a cargo transport unit to provide a warning that the contents of the unit are dangerous goods and present risks to the handler.

A cargo transport unit containing dangerous goods or residues of dangerous goods shall clearly display labels, placards, marks, and signs on each side and one on each end of the unit (4 sides). Here is a quick reference:

Sticker typeAffix to:Required when:
UN Number4 sidesA UN number is required for packing dangerous goods within the CTU with a gross weight exceeding 4000kg mass. A transport unit with more than one type of DG greater than 4000kg is precluded from this provision.
IMO Class and Subsidiary Risk4 sidesRequired for each class of DG over the limited quantity for that class of DG. A sub risk placard is not required, on the provision that there exists a primary risk placard for another substance in the CTU.
Marine Pollutant Mark4 sidesRequired if the product within the CTU is a marine pollutant (for all quantities).
Limited Quantity Mark4 sidesRequired if the product quantity is less than the limited quantity threshold.

Placards on the sides of a unit are not obscured when the unit’s attached extract from IMDG Code should be affixed in such a position that they doors are opened.
